Welcome to the Princess of Wales Own Regiment Pipes and Drums. We are an all
volunteer Reserve Pipe Band sponsored by our namesake regiment, and practice and perform out of the Montreal St. Armoury in Kingston Ontario. Our mission statement is to provide Highland pageantry with military tradition first and foremost to the Princess Of Wales Own Regiment (PWOR). We have also been known to provide for the city of Kingston and the surrounding communities in support of their need for mostly traditional highland music with regard to our rich history and heritage with the Canadian Forces.
The band's history began in Napanee Ontario under the guise of Sir John A. MacDonald
Pipes and Drums. In 1995 the band had a opportunity to relocate and the PWOR in Kingston
seemed a natural fit, though it was not a traditional Highland Unit, where it remains today and can be called upon at any time for parades and military functions.
Many of the members are currently serving with the Canadian Forces with various units
found on and around CFB Kingston as well as a large number of retired reserve and regular
force members. From Lieutenant Colonels to enlisted Privates, the band draws its talent from
a diverse cross section of military and civilian personnel.
The band practices every Tuesday evening at 18:00 hours till 20:30 depending on the number of bandsmen present and upcoming playing commitments. Certain evenings are set aside for instrument maintenance and music theory among the senior members. The student program for pipers and drummers is ongoing and typically a student will be paired up with an instructor based on their level of experience, knowledge of fingering/chanter basics, and the member's overall keenness for progression. The student drummers are classed as a group, with focus on the basic rudiments of drumming, reading of drum music and drumming time signatures.
If you have the time and the interest to learn Piping or Drumming in a relaxed military setting, come out any Tuesday evening. The Regiment typically shuts down for the summer for courses and taskings, but the band carries straight on through to keep the skills sharp and learn and practice new tunes. Practice chanters and drum sticks and pads
are provided by the band on a temporary loan basis, there are no fees involved. If
you
would like to see what we do or listen to a few tunes drop by the Armouries
on
Montreal St.
downtown Kingston. See you there.
